Freedom are anarchists and daredevils who declare themselves to be fighting for free access to the Zone and consequently find themselves in constant conflict with army units, military stalkers, and Duty. Freedom is a clan of stalkers who fight for free access to the Zone, and their views are somewhat communistic, believing in collective ownership of the zone and seeing it both as a scientific marvel and as a free life inside the zones borders. Because of their ideals they constantly find themselves in conflict with the Military and their long time nemesis, Duty. They view Duty as no more than a clan of jarheads who see nothing, hear nothing, and only know how to pull a trigger, as instead of finding a way to co-exist with the Zone, they attempt to destroy it, whereby the Zone retaliates with mutant attacks, anomalies, radiation hazards and blowouts. Similar in size and manpower to Duty, they have the offensive strength but medium and at times low resources to wage a faction war against Duty.

Freedom members originate from the dissenters and protestors of the Soviet regime during the Glasnost movement, some are political radicals and idealists, others are simply young people who want something good to believe in. Despite the hardships of the Zone, they see it as a refuge from a society that rejects them, where wealth, power and influence are the prerogatives of a privileged few. Here in the Zone, they are all equal and as such it should be shared and be free to all.

As with Duty, Freedom sees Loners as potential recruits but of course individual relationships differ. The Ukrainian Military and the Freedom faction are almost always at odds and the closest they have come to peace are tenuous and usually short-lived ceasefires, the same goes for the vicious Bandit faction who constantly raids outer posts of Freedom. However, Freedom does share the same outlook of Bandits about Duty, them being stupid cookie-cutter grunts who only know how to shoot. Freedom is hostile to both the Monolith and Mercenaries, as they are responsible for holding the Barrier, the only way into the northern reaches of the Zone from Wild Territory and must frequently fight off large groups of each, giving them the eternal ire of Freedom. The relationship between Ecologists and Freedom, however, has always been one of open communication, trade, and information with Freedom members actively helping out the Ecologists with their work and the scientists giving them their just due. Perhaps no other faction has such a remarkable and symbiotic relationship as Freedom and Ecologists, the heart of it lies with their similar optimistic goals.
